German Schmeltzer Data
submitted by Kathy Hoeting

The Schmeltzer line has been documented back to Sankt Ingert near Saarbrucken, Germany.  the earliest baptismal records are from 1805.

One other thought on the derivation of the name.  There is a town near this area called Schmelz and people from that town would be known as Schmeltzer.

Peter Schmeltzer m Luisa Peters

Leonard Birkelbach m Barbar Muller

Ludwig Schmeltzer m Sophia Birkelbach

Ludwig (1/12/1807-2/5/1881) and Sophia (5/12/1805-11/7/1885) Schmeltzer immigrated to Brooklyn (Williamsburg) in the 1830's.  They had 5 daughters and had a shop.  Ludwig also had a brother, Valentine who became a trappist monk in Gethesemene, KY.
