- Obituary: Walter Lee Smeltzer, 64, of Woodward
died of a heart attack Saturday at
Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. Services will be at
10 a.m. Tuesday at Brandt Funeral Home in
Woodward, with burial at Liberty Cemetery.
- Mr. Smeltzer was born in Waukee and lived in
Woodward since 1961. He retired from
the maintenance department of Oscar Mayer Co. and was a member
of the meatpackers union and Moose Lodge. Survivors
include his wife, Frances Elaine; three sons, Walter and Dennis,
both of Woodward, and Michael of Ames; and three
grandchildren. Friends may call
after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will
be present from 5 to 7 p.m.

Hubbell Ave. died of a heart attack
Saturday at Mercy Hospital Medical Center. Services will be at 11
a.m. Wednesday at Holy Name
Catholic Church in West Union, and burial will be in St.
Patrick's Catholic Cemetery at Parkersburg. Mr.
Schmelzer was born in West Union. He was an accountant with
Deloitte & Touche in Des Moines
and formerly worked in the accounting department for The
President Riverboat Casino in Davenport. He was
a member and cantor at St. Joseph's
Catholic Church and a cantor at St. Ambrose Cathedral, a member of
Knights of Columbus, a supporter of the Civic
Center of Greater Des Moines and a
former member of the Iowa State Fair Singers. Surviving
are his wife, Anastasia Nicklaus Schmelzer; his parents, James and
Virginia Schmelzer of West Union; three sisters,
Kathryn Sowder of Vadnais Heights,
Minn., Teresa Koch of Dubuque and Mary Schmelzer of Manchester;
and his grandmother, Florence
Bodensteiner of West Union. Friends
may call from 3:30 to 8 p.m. today at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home
in Cedar Falls, where there will be a
7:30 p.m. vigil service. Visitation will continue
from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at
the parish center next to the church.

- Obituary: Karen Dilworth Simmer, 54, of
Naples, Fla., died of cancer Tuesday at
Naples Community Hospital. Memorial services will be at
5 p.m. Saturday at North Naples United
Methodist Church. Private burial of the
cremains will follow. Mrs.
Simmer, a seventh-grade science teacher at Golden Gate Middle
School, was born in Ames and
lived in Des Moines until 1980. She
is survived by her husband, Stan; a daughter, Pam Logsdon of
Des Moines; a son, Jeff Schmelzer,
and her parents, Don and Millie Dilworth, all of Naples;
three sisters, Gail Witt of Longmont, Colo., Joan Beley of
Naples and Linda Vasquez of
Bucyrus, Mo.; a brother, Don Dilworth of Boothbay, Maine;
and two grandchildren. Beachwood
Society in Naples is handling arrangements.

Bettendorf died Wednesday at Genesis Medical
Center in Davenport after suffering a stroke. Services
were held Saturday. Mr.
Schmeltzer, a Des Moines native, was president of Luther
Manor of Scott County Inc.
and former president of Schmeltzer Brokerage Co. of
Bettendorf. McGinnis, Chambers and Sass
